Formerly known as Tennessee Eastman Corporation, the company has provided thousands of jobs for a large number of people in the Appalachian region. Situated along the Holston River, Tennessee Eastman Corporation was incorporated in 1920 to provide raw materials for Kodak’s photographic business. By the 1930s, the company expanded into producing acetate yarn, cellulosic plastics and more. During World War II, Eastman supported the U.S. by manufacturing one of the most powerful explosives at Holston Ordinance Works in Kingsport. It later became operations lead for the the Y-12 plant of Clinton Engineer Works which helped to develop the atomic bomb.
