Description
Nashville’s Union Station is truly a breathtaking architectural wonder. Several years ago, I visited the site and was awestruck by its beauty. This summer, I had the pleasure of revisiting Union Station once again. The structure is magnificent inside, and it’s one of those places you don’t want to miss when in Nashville.
Built in 1900, Union Station was an epicenter of American travel. Its Gothic design, complete with turrets and towers, made Union Station an architectural marvel in its day. The 65-foot, barrel-vaulted lobby ceiling features gold-leaf medallions and 100-year-old, original luminous prism stained glass. The marble floors, oak-accented doors and walls, with three limestone fireplaces contribute to the luster of Union Station, which has two bas-relief panels, a steam locomotive and a traveling chariot, at either end of the lobby.
The station served passengers of eight different railroads that provided passenger service to the city at that time. The train station was also used by streetcars until they were discontinued in Nashville in 1941. Union Station ceased train operation in 1979, and lay abandoned until opening as a hotel in 1986.
In 2021, the train station became a Marriott Autograph Collection Hotel. In 2015, it became a member of Historic Hotels of America, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A turn-of-the-century landmark, Union Station serves as an awe-inspiring reminder of the romance and grandeur of a bygone era, and it is a fine example of late-Victorian Romanesque Revival architecture, a must-see when in Nashville!
Thank you for viewing my gallery. I hope you will find my artwork worthy of hanging in your home or office, and trust you will enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed presenting it to you.
