Description
I came across this old country school on a backroad in Washington County, Tennessee in 2019. While most of us reminisce about the typical one-room schoolhouses, this school was considered a luxury in its day due to its massive size, comparatively speaking. Complete with its own bell tower, the school was initially named Locust Mount, later renamed Oak Hill, and finally deemed “Glendale School”. Located nine miles southwest of Historic Jonesborough, the school was built ca1913 and was opened in 1914. It was one of a few consolidated schools in the county. In 1914, the school had 126 students and a daily average attendance of 91. Children from the school attended high school at Sulphur Springs. With beautiful memories of yesteryear, the old school closed in 1943.
