The Old Salt House at historic Jonesborough, Tennessee has a beautiful history... At the onset of the Civil War in 1861, salt was a rare commodity and was difficult to come by. One had to cross enemy lines to get salt, and preserving food was key in an era prior to refrigeration. The county court of Washington County, Tennessee purchased a large quantity of salt and had it delivered by train to the house we know today as “The Salt House”. The proximity of the Salt House to the railroad was an ideal location. The beautiful Georgian building is characterized by wide, open spaces, large windows and has a penchant for simplicity in detail. The brick walls are three bricks thick and coated in plaster, and the ceilings range from twelve to fourteen feet high. Today, a beautiful old, antique Ford car is parked out front, and coupled with the beautiful old structure, lends for an air of sweet nostalgia.
