Description
This image of the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge at Cincinnati, Ohio was taken just after sunset at the twilight hour, or “blue hour” as it is often called. This view of the bridge across the Ohio River shows the cityscape of Cincinnati in the background, with the glow of sunset in the west. Our walk along the riverfront was especially beautiful with the glow of the lights from the bridge on this warm summer evening.
The Roebling Suspension Bridge was first opened to traffic on January 1, 1867. Its 1,075 foot span made it the longest bridge in the world. Now a National Historic Landmark, the bridge is an engineering marvel with two primary cables, each containing 5,180 individual wires. The cables were spun into place using wire imported from England, and in 1897 a second set of cables was added to support heavier loads.

I remember this bridge well. My first job out of college was in Cincinnati. I was fascinated by the Roeblings and their work. Really nice image, Shelia.
