This photograph was taken just after sunset in historic Johnson City, Tennessee. Sometimes you wait for just that right moment, just after the sun goes down, when the sky is all aglow with brilliant colors... I was fortunate to catch this shot at that time.
William Bean, Tennessee’s first settler, built his cabin along Boone’s Creek near present-day Johnson City in 1769. In the 1780s, Colonel John Tipton (1730-1813) settled on a farm nearby, and that farm today is known as Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site.
The town of Johnson City itself was founded in 1856 by Henry Johnson as a railroad station called “Johnson’s Depot”. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Johnson City served as headquarters for the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad as well as the Clinchfield Railroad. During the Civil War, Johnson City was known as Haynesville in honor of Confederate Senator Landon Carter Haynes. The town was formally incorporated in 1869. Today, the bustling little town in Northeast Tennessee is home to East Tennessee State University.
