Palmer Chapel, a sweet little chapel tucked away in the forest in Cataloochee Valley in the Great Smoky Mountains... This scene was so peaceful and serene, and reminded me of the old song, “There will be peace in the valley one day.” We are blessed! Tucked away in Big Cataloochee Valley in a remote area of the Great Smoky Mountains, Palmer Chapel was constructed in 1898 on land donated by Mary Ann Palmer, and it was the only church in Big Cataloochee at that time. The community was so small it could not support a full-time minister, which resulted in services being held once a month by one of the circuit-riding preachers. Former residents still hold a reunion each year at the little church. Big Cataloochee was first discovered by militiamen who were brought in to the valley to stop the Indian raids in the late 1700s... They fell in love with the beauty of the valley so much that they decided to settle there. Several historic buildings in the valley have been preserved for historic display. In addition to Palmer Chapel are the Will Messer Barn and the old Caldwell Place. In 2001, the National Park Service re-introduced elk into Cataloochee Valley. It was the first time that elk roamed these woods in over 150 years.
