Description
This beautiful old blacksmith’s cabin is located on the Thomas Amis Historic Site at Hawkins County in Northeast Tennessee. In the late 1700s, East Tennessee pioneer Thomas Amis settled on the 1,000-acre land grant he was awarded for his military service. Amis built the first stone house in Tennessee, along with a stone dam and mill on adjacent Big Creek. The original village included a blacksmith shop, foundry, forge, distillery and other buildings. Today, the property includes a restaurant overlooking Big Creek for visitors who wish to enjoy the site. [The original photograph has been digitally remastered to simulate an oil painting on canvas as shown here.]
Be sure to also see our companion print “Big Creek Dam and Waterfall”... The oldest stone dam in the State of Tennessee, Big Creek Dam is home to a lovely, picturesque waterfall in a peaceful country setting. Located on the Thomas Amis Historic Site at Rogersville in Hawkins County, Tennessee, the 174-foot long structure was built in the 1780s by Thomas Harlan, a Pennsylvania stonemason, architect and Dutch native whose descendants still reside in Hawkins County today. The dam sits just across the road from Amis Mill Eatery, a well-known and unique restaurant perched on a hill overlooking the dam and waterfall... A must-see when in Northeast Tennessee!
