In classic New England style, Portland Head Light at Cape Elizabeth, Maine, is stunning in autumn. The day was crystal clear, with only a slight breeze.
Portland Head Light, situated in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, holds a storied history dating back to its construction in 1787 under the directive of President George Washington. Illuminated for the first time in 1791, the lighthouse initially employed whale oil lamps within glass reflectors. During the Civil War in 1864, the tower's height was increased by 20 feet as a precaution against potential Confederate raids. In 1958, the lighthouse transitioned to full automation, marking the departure of its last keeper. The conversion to electricity accompanied a change in its characteristic flashing pattern to the present sequence. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Portland Head Light became the property of the Town of Cape Elizabeth in 2017, although the Coast Guard maintains its operational components.
