Memorial Chapel on Lake Junaluska, in Haywood County, North Carolina, with a beautiful reflection in the lake...
In 1945, President Harry Truman wrote a letter to the President of the Lake Junaluska Cottage Owners Association, Dr. Elmer T. Clark, stating, “It seems to me particularly fitting that you are erecting on the assembly grounds at Lake Junaluska in North Carolina a Memorial Chapel in honor of the Methodist youth from the southern states who served in the armed forces.”
In 1944, the Lake Junaluska Cottage Owners’ Association started a movement to raise funds for a war memorial chapel that would be “A Temple of Peace, erected in the name of the Price of Peace, in honor of those who served in the armed forces of our country in World War II.” Over the course of ten years, funds were raised and this beautiful chapel was built.
