The stately palmetto trees along the Battery in Charleston, South Carolina are some of the prettiest in the South. On a recent trip to Charleston, we enjoyed seeing the architecture of the beautiful mansions along the Battery, all of which were largely complemented by the many palmetto trees.
In 1861, South Carolina adopted its new flag, which added the Palmetto tree to the original design by Colonel William Moultrie in 1775 as used by South Carolina troops during the Revolutionary War. In 1939, the Palmetto tree, or sabal palmetto, was made the official state tree of South Carolina. Of the palm trees found in South Carolina, only one species is native to the state. The sabal palm goes by many names including sabal palmetto, palmetto, cabbage palmetto, cabbage palm, and swamp cabbage.
