During the Civil War in 1864, the tower's height was increased by 20 feet as a precaution against potential Confederate raids. In 1958, the lighthouse transitioned to full automation, marking the departure of its last keeper. The conversion to electricity accompanied a change in its characteristic flashing pattern to the present sequence. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Portland Head Light became the property of the Town of Cape Elizabeth in 2017, although the Coast Guard maintains its operational components.
