From our “Historical Keepsake” Image Collection...
This image makes me smile, because it’s the “back door” view of the beautiful Doak House at Greeneville, Tennessee. I’ve always been a back door sort of person, and maybe that’s why I photographed this side of the historic home, which I thought was somewhat “plantation worthy” in and of itself. It was one of those gray sky days with a little light peeking through the clouds, making the site even more stunning.
Built circa 1830, the Doak House was the home of Rev. Samuel Witherspoon Doak and his wife Sarah McEwen. Rev. Doak was one of the founding fathers of Tusculum University, formerly Tusculum College which is noted as the oldest college in the State of Tennessee. The Doak House opened as a museum in 1975.
