Description
The Johnnie Mercer Pier at Wrightsville Beach near Wilmington, North Carolina is shown in this wide-angle, panoramic view. I hurried out one morning to catch a sunrise, and saw how beautiful the Johnnie Mercer Pier was at it stretched out into the Atlantic Ocean. As I looked down, I noticed the imprints of countless footprints in the sand, evidence of beachgoers who had been there the day before. It was such a scene of tranquility and natural beauty, capturing the essence of a peaceful morning by the sea.
Located within minutes of downtown Wilmington, the pier is a prime locale for visitors to experience the exceptional saltwater fishing that the Cape Fear area is noted for. The original wooden pier was built in the 1930s, and was a completely wooden structure which later became a landmark along the beach. It was named “Johnnie Mercer” in honor of one of the original owners of 1939, a famous singer and songwriter, and operated the pier for more than 20 years prior to his death in 1964.
The old wooden pier was demolished by two hurricanes in 1996. The new pier opened in 2002, and is an architectural dream among piers along the coast... It is solid concrete, with deep-set pilings, estimated to withstand up to 200 mph winds. The Johnnie Mercer pier extends 1,200 feet out into the Atlantic Ocean. As one of the first all-concrete piers along the North Carolina coast, Johnnie Mercer’s Pier is a must-see for visitors to the area.... With its pristine beaches and beautiful coastline, it’s a gorgeous sight any time of day or evening.
