During a recent visit to Charleston, we delighted in admiring the architectural splendor of the magnificent mansions along the Battery, all wonderfully enhanced by the abundance of palmetto trees.
In 1861, South Carolina updated its flag, incorporating the Palmetto tree into Colonel William Moultrie's original design from 1775, used by South Carolina troops in the Revolutionary War. By 1939, the Palmetto tree, also known as sabal palmetto, became South Carolina's official state tree. Among South Carolina's palm trees, only one species is native: the sabal palm, known by various names including sabal palmetto, palmetto, cabbage palmetto, cabbage palm, and swamp cabbage.
