Description
The majestic palmetto trees lining the Battery in Charleston, South Carolina, are among the most attractive in the Southern region as showcased in this vertical shot. During a recent visit to Charleston, we delighted in admiring the architectural splendor of the magnificent mansions along the Battery, all wonderfully enhanced by the abundance of palmetto trees.
In 1861, South Carolina updated its flag, incorporating the Palmetto tree into Colonel William Moultrie's original design from 1775, used by South Carolina troops in the Revolutionary War. By 1939, the Palmetto tree, also known as sabal palmetto, became South Carolina's official state tree. Among South Carolina's palm trees, only one species is native: the sabal palm, known by various names including sabal palmetto, palmetto, cabbage palmetto, cabbage palm, and swamp cabbage.
Charleston, South Carolina, brims with Southern charm and a storied past. You can explore the historic district's cobblestone streets, lined with pastel homes steeped in history. Don't miss the stunning harbor views from the Battery promenade or the vibrant atmosphere of the City Market, a hub for local artisans. Food lovers will savor the diverse culinary offerings, from classic Lowcountry dishes to inventive fusions. History enthusiasts can immerse themselves in the city's narrative at museums like the Charleston Museum or on tours of antebellum homes. Plus, with beautiful beaches nearby, Charleston offers something for everyone in a nutshell!
