Description
Nestled among lush greenery in Northeast Tennessee, Historic Rocky Mount showcases a rustic old log cabin with a prominent brick chimney, known as the Cobb-Massengill House, which served as the first territorial capital of the Southwest Territory from 1790 to 1792 under the ownership of William Cobb.
Rocky Mount, Tennessee, holds a significant place in American history as the first capital of the Southwest Territory, established in the late 18th century as a crucial hub for westward-bound settlers. It flourished as a political and economic center, housing Governor William Blount's residence and witnessing pivotal events such as the drafting of the territory's constitution in 1796. However, its prominence diminished with Knoxville's establishment as the permanent capital. Despite this, Rocky Mount persevered, retaining its historic charm as a cherished landmark of Tennessee's rich heritage.
Situated in Piney Flats near Johnson City, Rocky Mount stands as a testament to the resilience of early pioneers, offering visitors a chance to explore the region's past.
