Description
The Meyer Bridge is the iconic red bridge in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens at Durham, North Carolina. The bridge was named in memory of the late J. Horst Meyer, a Duke physics professor and beloved friend of Duke Gardens. The bridge is located over the large pond in the Culberson Asiatic Arboretum and is a favorite spot for visitors to pause for photos. The Japanese-style arched bridge is a complement to the 55-acre public garden on the campus of Duke University.
The Sarah P. Duke Gardens are named after Sarah Pearson Duke, the wife of a prominent university benefactor, Benjamin N. Duke. The initial development of the gardens began in the 1930s, with the establishment of the terraced Doris Duke Center Gardens. Today, Sarah P. Duke Gardens spans 55 acres and is divided into four main areas: the Doris Duke Center Gardens, Culberson Asiatic Arboretum, Blomquist Garden of Native Plants, and the Historic Gardens. The gardens offer a diverse and beautiful collection of plants, flowers, and landscapes, providing a tranquil and educational environment for visitors to explore and enjoy. As a testament to the dedication of the Duke family and the ongoing commitment of the university, Sarah P. Duke Gardens stands as a botanical gem that continues to thrive and inspire generations of nature enthusiasts and scholars alike when visiting the Raleigh-Durham area.
