Description
This panoramic view of a train coming through old Union Station at Bristol, Virginia, shows a beautiful sunset over the old depot. While I had planned to a take a night shot of the old train station, the train itself prevented that shot; however, it was truly a blessing... I looked up and saw this gorgeous night sky, and thought it made a stunning, rather unique view of the Bristol railyard. The sunset had filled the sky with hues of orange, pink and purple, casting a warm glow over the surrounding landscape.
The Bristol Train Station was originally built in 1902 by the Norfolk and Western Railway Company. During World War II, the station played an important role in transporting troops and military equipment. The station's telegraph office was used to communicate with military bases across the country, and the station's facilities were used to repair and maintain military equipment.
In the 1960s and 1970s, however, the popularity of rail travel began to decline as people turned to automobiles and airplanes for transportation. The Bristol Train Station was eventually abandoned and fell into disrepair.
In the 1990s, however, a group of local residents and preservationists worked to save the station from demolition. They formed the Bristol Train Station Foundation and raised funds to restore the station to its former glory. Today, the station has been fully restored and is used for event space.
Bristol, Tennessee-Virginia is a unique city located on the border between Tennessee and Virginia. It is known as the "Birthplace of Country Music" and is home to the famous Bristol Motor Speedway, which hosts NASCAR races and other events throughout the year. The city is divided by State Street, with the Virginia side of the city known as Bristol, Virginia, and the Tennessee side known as Bristol, Tennessee. Despite being two separate states, the two cities share a strong sense of community and work together to promote economic development and tourism in the region. The city hosts several annual events, including the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion music festival, the Bristol Motor Speedway's NASCAR races, and the Bristol Bluegrass Festival.
